Principalship Grant:  Our 7 Goals


1Advertise, recruit, and select 15 participants to become
     principals.


2 Advertise, recruit, and select mentors.


3 Utilize a Program of Study checksheet showing:
                   a) 36 credit Master's courses
                   b) Requirement that participants take the Arizona
                       administrator's skills certification test and pass.


4 Develop and provide course curriculum.

5 Include Diné content through finding Diné individuals willing to share Diné perspective and/or expertise in schooling as parents, teachers, principals, other administrators to inform 15 participants.

6 Coordinate field placements at local
        schools each year.

7 Coordinate job placements for fourth (induction) year.




The Goals in Detail:

Goal 1.0  To recruit and select able Navajo teacher leaders and educators into a pipeline leading to certification as a school administrator in a school on the Navajo reservation.

Objective 1.0.1:  The Navajo School Administrators Preparation Program, through media announcements and direct school and community recruiting efforts, will identify and select a cohort with at least 15 eligible teachers and others who aspire to be school administrators from a pool of applicants as measured by project recruitment and application records.

Objective 1.0.2:  Utilizing the recruitment lists, during the first year of the project, participants leaving the cohort will be replaced 100% of the time by alternates to maintain nominal consistency.

 

Goal 2.0  To recruit, select, and train Navajo educational leaders to serve as mentors to prospective school administrators in schools on the Navajo reservation.

Objective 2.0.1 :  The Navajo School Administrators Preparation Program, through media announcements and direct school and community recruiting efforts, will identify and select 15 recognized educational leaders to be matched as mentors to project participants from a pool of applicants as measured by project recruitment and application records.

Objective 2.0.2:  Utilizing the recruitment lists, during the first year of the project, participants leaving as participant mentors will be replaced 100% of the time by alternates to maintain nominal consistency.

 

Goal 3.0  To prepare prospective Navajo school administrators to assume school administration positions in schools on the Navajo reservation.

Objective 3.0.1: All participants in the cohort of prospective school administrators will complete the designated number of credit hours (36) and the specific courses for each semester and summer session as prescribed in their student study plans, which will be documented by the end of the open registration period of each term.

Objective 3.0.2:  Upon the conclusion of the third academic year of the project, 100% of the prospective school administrators will be awarded Master's degrees and will have completed Arizona administrative certification requirements as measured by approved graduation applications and College of Education administrative certification approvals.

Objective 3.0.3:  Upon conclusion of the third academic year of the Project, 100% of participants in the cohort of prospective school administrators will successfully pass the skills examinations required for professional certification as measured by test preparation progress records and test result notifications.

Objective 3.0.4: Upon opening of the school year during the fourth year of the project, there will be a 100% placement rate of the prospective school administrators in salaried positions on administrative assignment in schools on the Navajo reservation as measured by project placement records.

 

Goal 4.0  To provide prospective Navajo school administrators with knowledge about improving teaching and learning in schools on the Navajo reservation.

 Objective 4.0.1:  By the end of the second year of the program, all participants will complete course work and professional development workshops which include research on how to improve teaching and learning in school settings.

Objective 4.0.2:  By the end of the third year of the program, all participants will have completed a personalized professional development plan designed to increase leadership skills necessary for improving teaching and learning in Navajo schools.

Objective 4.0.3:  By the end of the third year of the program, all participants will have completed and action research project associated with an internship that provides knowledge related to improving teaching and learning at a particular school site on the Navajo reservation.

 

Goal 5.0  To provide prospective school administrators with Navajo specific knowledge related to effective school administration on the Navajo reservation.

Objective 5.0.1:  Within the first year of the program, recruit Navajo content experts to instruct or co-instruct courses specifically related to school administration on the Navajo reservation as measured by project recruitment and employment records.

Objective 5.0.2:  By the end of the third academic year of the program, offer 36 hours of course work that meet Arizona state certification requirements, requirements specified by the Navajo Education Committee and specific content related to effective school administration on the Navajo reservation documented by registration records at the end of each term.

 

Goal 6.0  To provide prospective school administrators with authentic, field-based experiences through which they refine skills in light of what they learned about designs for optimal teaching and learning for Navajo students in school on the Navajo reservation.

Objective 6.0.1:  All mentors of prospective school administrators recruited into the program will be employed in an administrative capacity at a school on the Navajo reservation as documented by program recruitment records.

Objective 6.0.2:  Within the first 6 months of the project, prospective Navajo school administrators will be matched with practicing school administrators in schools on the Navajo reservation as documented by program placement records.

Objective 6.0.3:  All perspective school administrators will complete two (2) 135-hour internships under the supervision of a practicing school administrator in a school on the Navajo reservation.

Objective 6.0.4:  During the induction year of the program, all school administration participants will  be placed in an administrative capacity where they will be mentored and coached by more advanced educational leaders, as documents by program placement records.

 

Goal 7.0  Project participants will achieve full integration into school administration and enjoy job satisfaction after graduation and placement.

Objective 7.0.1: During the fourth year of the project, six months after placement, participants' perceptions pertaining to adversities in their work will be reduced by 75% as measured by group meeting and individual counseling follow-up session notes.

Objective 7.0.2:  During the fourth (induction) year of the project, job performance difficulties will be reduced 10% upon each joint bimonthly observations by the project director and supervising agent as measured by observation notes from preceding session.

Objective 7.0.3: As a result of exposure to information and research on school leadership provided by the project director during the fourth year, project participants will demonstrate increased knowledge of issues of school leadership and Navajo teaching and learning as measured by each participants' ability to articulate at least three issues at monthly group and individual sessions.
