National Science Foundation
TCUP Grant

We are currently working on a planning grant that will result in an implementation grant proposal to the National Science Foundation focused on supporting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in higher education settings. Through this planning grant (supported by NSF funds), an analysis of all Diné College programs related to support of STEM as well as information regarding Navajo Nation employment opportunities for students who participate in these programs will be completed. Data gathered will be used to analyze needs and result in a proposal for implementation of a 5-year plan to support College-identified goals. The implementation grant submission date is June 2005.

Planning Grant Project Objectives:

1

Improving as needed upon existing strengths in the health, biological, and physical sciences together with mathematics

2

Expanding College capabilities in engineering and computer science

3

Working with the College's Center for Diné Teacher Education and articulating universities to develop an effective discipline-based STEM Education curriculum.

Our Planning Grant  is encapsulated in four phases:

Phase I: An overall assessment of the present STEM program within the College infrastructure. It will include the aggregate impact on students of course offerings in STEM; of STEM faculty; and of such physical resources as laboratory and classroom space, laboratory equipment, and computer resources.

Phase II: A course by course evaluation of the STEM curriculum, including content, student preparedness and achievment, student demand, and teaching effectiveness.

Phase III: Development of an institutional plan leading to preparation of a full implementation grant to facilitate growth and improvement.

Phase IV: A preliminary analysis of Phases I, II, and II, leading to the development of a plan for evaluating progress during the implementation period.
